For over 80 days, Washington, D.C. has been under an illegal and unwarranted military occupation. This week, we’ve learned that this occupation has been extended until at least February 2026.

District residents number more than 700,000, yet do not have a voting member of Congress. Its nickname is Chocolate City and became the first major Black city in the U.S. in 1957. It vote overwhelming democrat in every election, with some of the most progressive in the country related to minimum wage, transportation subsidies, and family leave.
Our neighborhoods have been terrorized by masked vigilantes with little to no regard for the law or due process. An average of 60-100 people are rounded up daily. Our ability to govern ourselves is under threat, with Congress exploring the reversal of home rule. I’m not going to lie – it is bleak out there.

All this just to say, this administration tests the limits of what they can get away with. What’s happened in the District of Columbia has normalized this highly illegal behavior. By staying longer and deploying more National Guard across the country, it’s hard to ignore that this is clearly building up to some kind of showdown. All empires fall, eventually. When a government decides to stop feeding their citizens and sets their military against them…that sure feels like writing on the wall.
